PROGRAM

Mozart: Flute Concerto No. 2

Leshnoff: Flute Concerto No. 2 (World Premiere)

—Demarre McGill, flute

Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 4 “Italian”

Christopher Zimmerman, conductor

One of the most sought-after flutists of his generation, Demarre McGill, Principal Flute of the Seattle Symphony, brings his rich, expressive tone to Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 2, followed by the highly anticipated World Premiere of Jonathan Leshnoff’s Flute Concerto No. 2—a powerful new work written to showcase McGill’s expressive depth and virtuosic command.

The evening concludes with the radiant Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 4 “Italian,” inspired by his travels through Italy and brimming with energy and exuberant rhythms. As the composer wrote, “the whole country had such a festive air that I felt as if I were a young prince making his entry... this will be the happiest piece I have ever written.”

“From his first notes, the effect was astonishing. It was the tone he drew from his instrument which caught the ear first, and continued to throughout the performance. Totally clean, liquid, mellifluous—i.e., honeyed—in the best sense of the word, rounded and beautiful, it beckoned you in.” (The Sunbreak)

“From his first notes, the effect was astonishing.

A Fundraiser to benefit the Filipino American National Historical Society DMV Chapter.

On July 22-25, 2026, FANHS DMV will be hosting the 2026 FANHS Conference at Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Virginia.  This fundraising concert aims to help support that event.

About FANHS

The Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) was founded in Seattle, Washington, by Dorothy Laigo Cordova in 1982. It was incorporated in the State of Washington as a non-profit organization in 1985. Dorothy’s late husband, Fred Cordova, served as FANHS Founding President and Archivist.

Since then, FANHS has continued to grow as a volunteer-run organization, governed by 27-members of the FANHS Board of Trustees, with the FANHS National Office and National Pinoy Archives in Seattle, Washington; a FANHS National Museum in Stockton, California; and 40+ Chapters throughout the United States of America.

The Filipino American National Historical Society began commemorating October as Filipino American History Month nationwide in 1992, and is recognized as the primary informational resource on Filipino Americans for:

•    community organizations

•    primary and secondary schools, colleges, and universities

•    local and national museums and historical associations

•    independent authors, playwrights, and filmmakers

•    teachers, students, scholars, and anyone interested

Since 1987, FANHS has sponsored national conferences (later ratified as a biennial event) where community folks of all ages and from all walks of life gather to share and present research, network with other Filipino Americans, and honor those who have produced ground-breaking innovative work in the field of historical research and analysis.

An Evening with Yo-Yo Ma by the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra

Tickets for this performance are currently sold out. Please check back periodically, as additional inventory may become available.

Christopher Zimmerman, conductor

Program:
Sibelius: Finlandia
Shostakovich:  Cello Concerto No. 1
            Yo-Yo Ma, cello
Shostakovich:  Symphony No. 6

“The best-known, most versatile music soloist in this country and perhaps in the world” (The Washington Post), cellist Yo-Yo Ma joins the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra (FSO) to perform Shostakovich’s defiant Cello Concerto No. 1. With over 120 albums and 19 Grammy Award wins, Ma’s extraordinary career is a testament to his belief in culture’s power to generate trust and understanding. “Ma is that rarest of players... whose mastery and influence are so all-encompassing that he casts a shadow across the very concept of the instrument itself” (Arts ATL).

The FSO also performs Shostakovich’s deeply expressive Symphony No. 6, a work that echoed the struggles and spirit of a turbulent era. Don’t miss this historic musical tribute.

The FSO, under the esteemed direction of Christopher Zimmerman, presents this program in celebration of the 120th anniversary of the Shostakovich’s birth. Experience the powerful and deeply expressive music of Dmitri Shostakovich, whose works reflect the tumultuous history of his time. “The FSO routinely does more than most regional orchestras dare...” (The Washington Post).

This special performance is a co-presentation with the Center for the Arts at George Mason University and made possible in part with support from the McKeever Legacy Fund.

This is a Special Event and not part of the Great Performances at Mason series.

Tickets to this performance are not available as part of a subscription package or at a discount.

This performance is appropriate for all ages.
